A business can be top-rated on Google and still missing from ChatGPT’s answer. The October 2026 test shows how common that is, and the Seven-point check shows where to look.
What the test showed
Everline asked ChatGPT and Google AI Mode for the best businesses in ten local categories across Toronto and the GTA, from a logged-out browser, then checked which top-ranked Google listings each one named. The method is in the October 2026 report.
| Listings | Checked | ChatGPT only | AI Mode only | Both | Neither |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto businesses | 93 | 11 | 7 | 8 | 67 |
| Toronto listings | 97 | 13 | 7 | 10 | 67 |
| All GTA listings | 198 | 29 | 17 | 22 | 130 |
Most names the assistants gave were not on the top-ranked list at all: 85 of 290. And the two assistants rarely agreed. For the same question they had 1.2 names in common out of five, on average.
Reason one: it cannot tell your business apart
An assistant has to be sure which business it is naming. A listing called “Roofing Toronto | Best Roofer” could be anyone. A business with two listings, under two slightly different names, looks like two businesses with half the reviews each. In the test, 13 businesses held more than one of the sampled listings.
The first two checks after the named checks in the Seven-point check are about exactly this: the listing name, and one consistent identity.
Reason two: it cannot confirm you beyond Google
The Rec’d Check asks about Bing Places because ChatGPT’s web search does not run on Google. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and names Microsoft as one, and Microsoft has said Bing is ChatGPT’s default search. OpenAI also crawls sites with its own OAI-SearchBot, which a site has to allow. The check also asks whether at least one third-party list or directory names the business. A business that exists only on its own Google listing gives an assistant one source to check.
Reason three: others have a stronger record
Ratings and reviews still count. In the test, none of the listings rated under 4.5 was named. Past that floor, review count alone did not decide it: the reviews question has the numbers, including a roofer with 561 reviews who was never named.
What to do
Work through the checks in order: the listing name, one listing per location, rating and reviews, Bing Places, one list or directory, then schema on the website. The roofing page shows the same list applied to one trade.
